‘The Sisters’, Samantha and Kelsey Lewis are a Canadian, Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) artist group. As
members of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, the group is composed of two self-taught sisters, who
use their shared experiences, and ancestral roots to create art that tells a story.
“Like many Native American families, we grew up segregated from our culture, language and community. We have spent
many years re-learning our traditions. Our art is a part of our journey and healing.” Having grown up
spending most of their time on an Ojibwe Reserve in Ontario, the Sisters found solace in woodland style
paintings and the stories they tell. “The beautiful colours, bold lines and spiritual imagery have always
resonated deeply emotionally for us.”
“Being able to work together with Teresa and bring our visions to life on her beautifully crafted leather
goods is incredibly humbling and exciting for us. Most of the art we create has been very personal to us
so to share it, not only with Teresa but with those wishing to appreciate and support our communities, is
incredible." Along with drawing and painting, the Sisters also spend their time creating baskets, ribbon
skirts and beaded artwork.
